Mechanisation over exploration: our approach to mining risk
Most mining capital is lost before the first tonne is moved. Our portfolio is built to avoid that stage almost entirely.
Conventional mine development carries its heaviest risk in the exploration phase, where capital is committed against a deposit that may not exist at economic grade.
The soul of our mining business is the mechanisation of workings that are already producing at artisanal or small scale, but which are fiscally viable for expansion. The deposit has already declared itself. This eliminates exploration layers, translating to zero or very low financial risk and a very high return on investment.
It also formalises economic activity that already exists in our host communities, rather than displacing it.
